Requesting a Duke Unique ID (DUID) Number

Duke Unique IDs (DUIDs) are assigned to all students, staff, and faculty automatically when they are entered in the student information system (SISS) or the human resources information system (SAP). If you require a DUID for someone who is otherwise affiliated with Duke, please follow the steps below to request that a DUID be created for them.

  1. Check the directory to be sure an ID has not been assigned.
    1. Go to http://www.duke.edu/online
    2. Click on "Search for Duke person or department" (4th line down in bottom box on the left)
    3. If you get the login screen, enter your NetID and password
    4. Enter the person's name in the box on the top right (under the "Search" heading).
    5. Press enter.
    6. The Duke Unique ID is displayed near the bottom of the entry.
  2. If there is no entry in the directory, send the following information to dukeid@duke.edu (note that the failure to include all information or the inclusion of inaccurate information may result in a delay in issuing the DUID).
    1. Full legal name (including full middle name - not just initial)
    2. Social Security Number
    3. Date of Birth
    4. Sponsor (Requests for Duke Unique IDs are only accepted from regular, paid staff at Duke.)

You will receive an email in response with the Unique ID number. Please allow 48 hours for a response.
